President Mesić Signs the 'Seal The Deal!' Petition and Receives the Energy Charter
As a part of United Nations 64th anniversary celebrations on the 24th October and the global United Nations campaign to combat climate change – Seal the Deal – the Croatian President, Stipe Mesić, today signed the petition.
The petition was also signed by 2070 people during the EKO-FEST fair held on the 23rd and 24th October. The President was presented with the petition with previous signatures by the UNDP Resident Representative Yuri Afanasiev, and at the same event also received the Energy Charter signed by 127 towns and 20 counties, which obliges them to improve energy efficiency, promote the use of renewable resources, and systemic energy management in order to reduce costs and protect the environment, as well as encourage sustainable development of local communities benefiting all citizens.
Countries signatories of the United Nations Framework Climate Change Declaration, Croatia included, are looking to "Seal the Deal" at the Climate Change Conference in December in Copenhagen and commit themselves to reducing greenhouse gas emissions between 50-80% by 2050, and thus reduce the catastrophical effects of temperature rises above 2 degrees Celsius.
